What is :Otherscape?

:Otherscape is a tabletop roleplaying game set in an alternate future in which the majority of humanity now resides within various Megacities. Though rife with cyberpunk speculative technology, the world is secretly prevaded by instances of the old-world legends hiding inside these Megacities. The story of :Otherscape focuses on player characters being hired in crews to find and obtain the physical Sources of such magic and the supernatural power.

Key features of :Otherscape

  • A unique setting that combines elements of science fiction and cyberpunk fiction with highly contrasting fantasy and supernatural aspects.
  • Powered by the Mist Engine, with gameplay that champions player creativity and flexibility, whilst ensuring that pacing doesn’t slow down and everyone gets a chance to shine.
  • An easy-to-use character creation system based on descriptors, instead of numbers and modifiers.
  • Characters that undergo dramatic story-driven transformations instead of level progressions, as narrative choices shape gameplay.

What’s this cyberpunk setting about?

  • Heists: Player character crews engage in high-octane missions to secure new magical Sources, protect an asset, or steal tech.
  • Trans-humanism, magic, and tech: Inspired by Ghost In The Shell and Akira, characters transform between three aspects of evolution - myth, tech, and humanity - exploring new frontiers of being.
  • Dystopia vs. Hope: Post-modern themes like meaninglessness, loneliness, corporate greed, mass warfare and climate change, clash with another world, filled with mythology, symbolism, and meaning.

One Roll System, Simple Yet Rich Gameplay

Unlike many other cyberpunk tabletop RPGs, :Otherscape does not feature page-upon-page of susbsytems and modifiers for players to use in every kind of gameplay scenario.

Instead, :Otherscape uses the Mist Engine - which has players creating and using their characters by employing a series of descriptive tags. This means that characters are formed entirely from descriptors, all of which affect who they are as well as what they can do.

When performing any actions, players need only add up the number of descriptors that make sense to use in their current action - before combining that number with a roll of two D6s to create their final total for the action. There are no damage rolls; the impact of the action is derived from the same roll, freeing up players and MCs to enjoy the cinematic thrill of the story.

Characters Fundamentally Transform Throughout The Game

Descriptors aren’t just a means for players to have a better chance at succeeding when performing actions with their characters, they’re also a blueprint for who their characters are.

Each character in :Otherscape is made up of tags from the Noise - or technology - the Mythoi - or fantastical elements - and their Humanity, or what forms their personality. These tags can act as guiding principles for players when roleplaying their characters, as they’ll need to consider whether their actions or words fit these descriptors.

PCs that stray too far from their main themes can end up swapping out entire power sets, taking up new cyberware, a new magical Source, new personal features, and potentially ascending beyond their humanity -- setting up the perfect dramatic moment while concretely affecting the character gameplay going forward.

Ancient Japan collides with the more-than-modern world of 20XX

The first setting book for :Otherscape is Tokyo:Otherscape, which will see players exploring the Japanese Megacity in the distant future of 20XX.

Amongst all the speculative aspects of technology - such as VR Gear, androids and cyberspace - are elements of the ancient world, like Yokai and Yurei (spirits and ghosts). These aspects are sometimes even combined with each other, like Oni demon motorcycle gangs and old gods reborn as computer programs.

Players will be able to take on jobs across Tokyo, as well as ally with or against its various factions and create characters within the unique subcultures found therein. This setting book features rich history of Japanese folklore interwoven with the iconic imagery of Japanese cyberpunk.

The Books

Metro:Otherscape is the core rulebook for the tabletop roleplaying game and features everything players need to start playing: such as gameplay rules, character creation, information on the core setting and examples of jobs.

Tokyo:Otherscape is a setting book for the tabletop RPG and requires Metro:Otherscape to be used. With Tokyo:Otherscape, players can find information about the Megacity of Tokyo, more options for character creation and new jobs to take.

Accessories include an MC Screen, two beautifully-illustrated pregen character packs, and dice, as well as the Action Database reference book, which supports player and MCs in using the game's limitless-system with suggestions for actions and how to handle them.

The Tokyo:Otherscape Box Set include both core and setting book, as well as the MC screen, 10 character folios, 20 tracking cards, and 6 :Otherscape dice.
