:Otherscape is now available!

Son of Oak is proud to announce the digital release of :Otherscape, a brand-new roleplaying game that splices fantasy figures like the King Arthur,  Kitsune and the Baba Yaga with a sci-fi cyberpunk setting to create a completely unique tabletop experience.

Created by Amit Moshe and published by Son of Oak - the studio behind the Ennie award winning City of Mist - with artwork from legendary manga artist Isago Fukuda (QUEERZ!) this mythic cyberpunk RPG invites players to run, shoot, drive, heist, hack, fight and charm their way through a future world that can’t forget the past.

Otherscape TTRPG King Arthur Character

Set in the year 20XX, the game world sees humanity now flocking to Megacities drowning in Noise - an incessant and unending flood of stimuli consuming the attention of the tech-age denizens. From adverts to stock exchange data to drugs, the Noise has taken over everything. But with humanity largely distracted, the Mythoi can creep in: supernatural and fantastical forces once thought lost but who have remained in play by attaching themselves to physical Sources. At the demand of their employers, players must find and extract these Sources of Mythical power  - no matter what it takes.

After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in 2022, players can now get the digital version of :Otherscape’s two key books: Metro:Otherscape and Tokyo:Otherscape, starting today (August 12th).

METRO: THE CORE BOOK

With Metro:Otherscape, players can learn everything they need to know to begin playing the tabletop roleplaying game. Based on the Mist Engine, the gameplay for :Otherscape is designed to be as robust or as simple as players want it to be. Unlike tabletop RPGs that have to be heavily altered by their players to fit their needs, :Otherscape is flexible enough to work for veteran players who want a richer experience, as well as beginners who need a gentle start.

Instead of requiring players to use countless tables of number modifiers for each aspect of the game, :Otherscape uses a single word-based system for everything. Players create their characters using key descriptors - such as “Summon Undead” or “Cybernetic Arm” - which they can then use to power their actions in-game. Whenever players want to perform an action whose outcome could either have uncertain or dramatic consequences, they roll two six-sided dice (2d6) and add together the number of descriptors that are relevant to the action to make the total result. This words-driven approach to gameplay gives players the flexibility to be creative in their problem-solving and decision-making, whilst ensuring that actions can be resolved quickly and the flow of the game remains fast-paced, allowing everyone to feel involved at the table.

TOKYO: THE SETTING BOOK

Tokyo:Otherscape is the first setting book for the RPG and features an in-depth look at one of the game’s major cities. The Tokyo of :Otherscape’s 20XX includes everything you’d expect from a Cyberpunk Megacity - androids, exo-suits and VR gear - alongside the completely unexpected. From Yokai spirits to Kami gods to Oni demons, the streets of Tokyo are teeming with the strange and supernatural Mythoi, all of which clash with the obnoxious loudness of the Noise. Though once revered, the old powers of Tokyo have since lost much of the respect of the people, many of whom now only utilize them for their own gains. Players can expect to cross demonic court functionaries who use ‘sinsight’ to spy on possible sinners doomed to hell, or hench people wielding swords originally held by legendary samurai - now serving the whims of their corrupt owners.

All characters in Tokyo:Otherscape have a mixture of the old and new inside them, with players free to select from various key traits of technology, Mythoi, and personality to form their characters - including the option to wield the power of iconic creatures from Japanese mythology like Yurei (ghosts) and Shikigami (companion spirits). Alternatively, you can create characters that fuse whichever unusual pairings of technology and Mythoi you want: such as an Oni demon motorcycle courier or a digitized version of an ancient Kami god.

Players are free to create their own characters or use one of the pre-generated options, either way it’s as complicated or as straightforward as they want it to be. As players explore the Megacity, complete jobs and build relationships they may find their characters changing, not just how they interact with others but also in their fundamental make-up. Whether they ally-up with one of the many factions found throughout Tokyo, reject the principles of their chosen subculture, or take a right-turn during an important job, choices can irrevocably change Player Characters in :Otherscape, especially if they compromise key aspects of their character. Some choices can even lead to players swapping out key traits that make up their character for new ones, having a direct impact on gameplay.

In other words, :Otherscape is a tabletop RPG that features a unique world that combines elements of both cyberpunk and fantasy, alongside word-powered gameplay that prioritizes player flexibility and creativity over unnecessarily complicated systems, founded in the well-loved system of City of Mist.
