Legend in the Mist voted Most Anticipated 2025 RPG over Critical Role’s Daggerheart, Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG and MCDM’s Draw Steel
Son of Oak Game Studio’s Legend In The Mist rustic fantasy RPG is the Most Anticipated 2025 Tabletop Roleplaying Game, according to EN World’s annual survey, which ran through the final weeks of 2024 and whose results were revealed last Friday. The upcoming 2025 title – the first fantasy game using Son of Oak’s Mist Engine, which uses keywords instead of stats for action resolution – has surpassed several other D&D challengers including Critical Role’s Daggerheart, Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG and MCDM’s Draw Steel, as well as Modiphius’ and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Kickstarted early in 2024 to the tune of $855,000, Legend In The Mist compelled the TTRPG audience with its striking combination of the aforementioned groundbreaking game engine and a nostalgic approach for fantasy tales of adventure and perilous journeys, overlaid with iconic art by Mexican illustrator Daniel Pinal. Designed to tell Hero’s Journey stories of unlikely heroes from remote rural communities travelling the countryside and rising up to meet their destiny, the game draws inspiration from creations like Lord of The Rings, Wheel of Time, and Princess Mononoke.
Unlike many “six-attributes” Dungeons & Dragons clones, the game’s keyword-based system promises to help players focus on the narrative aspects of their own ‘legend’, allowing elements like backstory details and personality quirks to have just as much in-game impact as spells and weapons, and boasting the same fan-favorite built-in character motivation and story arc system as other games based on the Mist Engine – City of Mist, QUEERZ!, and :Otherscape. During 2024, the Legend In The Mist dev team, led by Son of Oak founder Amit Moshe, have shared their designs for handling parties of different power levels (e.g., Gandalf and Frodo), journeying and exploration, support for any imaginable magic system, and using the engine to play a tactical game. The envisioned Legend In The Mist Corebook will therefore support all settings and games, with a strong emphasis on rural, nostalgic features, while the setting and campaign book Hearts of Ravensdale will provide game groups with a ready-to-play rustic fantasy world and adventures.
Beyond the survey votes, members of the EN World community have also expressed their excitement for Legend in the Mist. “I am so excited about Legend In The Mist!! [...] I've already made a shelf on my wall to give it a place of honor [...] it's gotten me excited about getting into roleplaying again,” said Anteros Gold. Another fan referred to :Otherscape, the recently released cyberpunk game using the same engine, “I just received my physical backer copy of Metro:Otherscape today! So I just got double excited for Legend in the Mist now.”
Now available for pre-order on the Son of Oak webstore, Legend In The Mist is set to be released in digital format in Spring 2025 and in print in Summer 2025. In their final 2024 backer update, the team has announced that they will be releasing PDF copies of the book’s chapters to backers, starting with player rules and a learn-as-you-play choose-your-own-adventure comic on January 31st.
