EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO CREATE AND PLAY A LEGEND IN THE MIST!

Legend in the Mist is a narrative-first RPG for players who want a fantasy role-playing experience that feels like a fireside story, with heartfelt moments, exciting conflicts, and gasp-worthy character-altering consequences.

RUSTIC FANTASY

Spin a fireside tale of villagers and other unlikely heroes setting out on a quest into a greater unknown world, rife with peril and mystery.
  • Unlikely heroes: Start off in your village or remote region and face grumpy neighbors or local drama.

  • Journeys in the countryside and wilderness: scout, explore, traverse landscapes dark or beautiful, discover ruins, or find forgotten landmarks.

  • Camping and fellowship: Set camp, train, craft items and brew potions, and build relationships with your fellow travelers.

  • Dangerous encounters: Face unscrupulous travelers and strange creatures, and learn about their sorcerous ways and weaknesses.

  • Ancient lore, crafty factions: Discover the great world beyond, the powers that be, and the dark past that started it all.

  • More than just battles: Overcome challenges through battle, magic, wits, physical feats, charm, cunning - or love, gossip, or great cooking - anything is possible.

  • Carve your fate: Make hard choices that will shape you. Will you become the hero to save the realm, or just a traveler passing by? The choice is yours.

The comic book tutorial is so useful to introduce new players to the hobby (and to the system), and the book in itself is so beautiful that it could be worth buying just for the art. The hidden gems are in the Narrator section that contains easy and step by step guides for writing adventures and full campaigns using this system. I cannot recommend enough this game: not one of my players wants to move back to D&D 5e since we switched to Legend in the Mist for our Dragon Heist campaign.

Son of Oak Studio has a great game here. I hope their ideas continue with their upcoming projects.

I’m a big fan of all of their games.

I’m a big fan of all of their games. But with legend in the mist, they really outdid themselves. The presentation the adaptation of the rules, the little tidbits of lore, everything just fits.

I also like that all collapses to one basic roll mechanic. HOWEVER: in play the freedom is quickly replaced by repetitive actions without little variety. The reason is this: challenges can be overcome in a variety of ways, but it never makes sense to do multiple things in parallel (like one character threatening an enemy while the other attack, which translates to different negative status tracks for the enemy)!because a) a challenge is overcome once ONE status track reaches its limit, and b) only the highest status track impacts the dice roll So adding an „intimidated 3“ status to a „wounded 3“ status on a challenge/an enemy makes no sense and you are almost always better off if you contribute to the wounded status. FATE handles such Freeform play much better.

Thank you for your feedback, Patrick! I'll just note that statuses of one kind can easily be used to overcome a Challenge in different yet related ways. For example, if your adversary is wounded-3, you can add that 3 to the Power of your roll to intimidate them, starting your "fear damage" at intimidated-3. For this reason, it is well worth taking different actions against a Challenge and building up different statuses, as they can support a finishing action, even if it delivers a different type of status. (Of course, this won't work if you're trying to charm someone while attacking them.)

The system is genius! Elegant, simple, thoughtful, and narratively powerful. Character creation is straightforward and fast, or deep and thought provoking. The Tag system has a very narrative focus, and the mechanics can be as light or tactical as the table prefers. The system doesn't get in the way during dramatic encounters like combat and keeps the action fast. Both of the settings are rich and exciting to immerse yourself in. Since June 21st I've purchased both core books and run each game a dozen times. For kids and adults. For small groups of 3 and large groups of 8. For narrative players and tactical players. Every time the session was a smashing success! I've run dozens of RPGs over the last 30+ years and these are two of my favorites! Thanks SO much, Amit and the Son of Oak team for creating the best RPG system I've ever played and run!

Paul, you made our day! We're so glad you're enjoying our games, it's what we made them for and it seems you took the tag system right away. Keep having fun and making great stories!

One of the major issues my players have had with those older systems is wrapping their heads around the freedom of character creation and the openness of the status system, both of which are handled nicely through the core book and supplementary learn to play comic book and action grimoire. What I appreciate most about this system and what lacks from other fantasy RPGs like D&D is how character development is reflected by meaningful changes to your character's themes and tags. In traditional d20 fantasy I can defeat my character's personal antagonist and nothing much changes in how they play. "Mist" system games let that be a defining moment of change is reflected on the character sheet. The art is stellar and up there with "City of Mist" in terms of it's tone setting. Looking forward to seeing the setting book, and what advice it give for playing more grounded and folk influenced fantasy.

System: the tag-based system is a dream come true for players who want to be creative with both their character creation and game play. The narrative-first philosophy runs deep and brings an exciting new evolution to the Powered by The Apocalypse formula at its roots. Narrative-first means that a battle grids and inventory management are hand-waved to allow more room for the player's imagination and freedom. This freedom can be so overwhelming that I would strongly recommend the Action Grimoire (sold separately) for any players coming from traditional D20 systems or who appreciate a more curated list of available options for their character to choose from, when taking their turn. It also makes me hesitate to agree with the term "rules-light" that some may prescribe, as there is plenty of complexity here that I will describe below in The Teach section. One of the most exciting potentials for such a tag-based system is hinted at within the chapters discussing magic, where entire systems can be hand crafted through combining component "ingredients" that fuse narrative ideas (such as Land-shaping) with complimentary mechanics (assigning status tiers to a caster's surrounding environment that is tracked and depleted when drawn upon). The possibilities here are limitless. If that weren't enough, the game provides an Oracle to help solo players and game masters alike design adventure content on the fly. Setting & Content: The system is presented in a setting-agnostic context so you can run it in any world you like, such as your favorite IP. Some may consider this lack of a more specific setting a drawback, but between the included tutorial, starter adventure, and free demo acquired separately, Son of Oak is already setting the stage for a dedicated campaign book set to release soon. Likewise, the generous amount of character options, challenges (in the form of monsters and other adversities), magic, and other scene content do an excellent job at evoking the kind of "rustic" fantasy folklore that is enticing to discover. Lacking any provided setting, it still would have been nice to have some kind of world creation tools to help players build a realm of their own, but there is already some great free content available for that (Worlds Without Number, I'm looking at you.) The Teach: Son of Oak sets a new standard for onboarding players thanks to a lengthy tutorial taking the form a gorgeous choose-your-own-adventure comic. This covers all the basics of what you need to jump in for your first session. The Hero book provides plenty of more instructions for players and game masters to digest the rules, with examples and helpful notes in the margins. More advanced options are indicated to help make the substantial How to Play chapter easier to digest. Some design elements, such as how tags are highlighted, will put those with color deficiency or black and white printers at a disadvantage. Game masters will learn that this RPG has plenty of meat on the bones, with advanced mechanics to serve deeper levels of complexity and an additional Narrator (as the GM is called) book for their own consumption. This can make the learning process for the "Narrator" a substantially larger task than for the player, especially since such a narrative game has less rules to provide structure, and instead requires more of a skill in weighing a variety of factors in the moment to make a subjective judgement call. It's more of an art form and less of a science. Visual Presentation: the artwork in the book is enough to merit a purchase, on its own. If you're a fan of Studio Ghibli or richly illustrated comic books, you'll find this worthy to sit atop your coffee table. Those with a keen eye will notice chapter headings and other decorative touches by artist Alejandra Pinal in the margins evoking heraldry designs and other motifs found within the illuminated manuscripts of the medieval era. Any of these could be framed and placed on one's wall as a centerpiece. As for the graphic design, aside from the minor tag highlighting concerns described above, it's superb. The Hero book is especially easy to read, with a balance of text and other visual elements throughout. The Narrator book is less consistent, with more text-heavy rules sections contrasted by the absolutely gorgeous "Satchel of Perils" chapter illustrating the varied challenges of the game with both whimsical portraits of adversaries and breathtaking landscapes capturing the mystique of rustic fantasy.

The character progression is deeply satisfying. Your character grows as a person, not just as a number. It feels freeing to move away from RPGs that count squares of movement and ever gold piece. If you want to step into a rustic fantasy adventure, this game is for you.

Best narrative game

Legend in the mist replaced every narrative game for me. The reason? It adds some little mechanical crunch (optional) and different power levels (again, optional). Those are things I miss in other systems like FATE or PBTA.
